Talon Winery is a working winery located off Tates Creek Rd in Lexington, Ky. I have photographed several weddings at Talon. But what makes this venue so special is how beautiful it is. The venue has taken care to make every part of their property photogenic! From the getting ready bridal suite and it’s beautiful maroon walls; to the sweeping fields, rolls of grape vines and pond; and finally the reception barn with beautiful twinkling lights, Talon is gorgeous. I have never seen a wedding that that didn’t photograph spectacularly, and it is a wonderful choice for any bride!

Usually detail shots are not dependent on the location as much as what the details and the wedding theme are. One exception to this is the dress. Putting the dress in a location on the venue’s property helps tell the story and set the scene while showing off that beautiful gown you’ve purchased. At Talon, the dress can be taken outside for the vineyards if you’re comfortable with that. Or kept in the bride suite around the winery decor. Also, a nice touch is incorporating the wine bottles in to the details.
Talon’s bridal suite is beautiful. The colors and decor work perfectly for beautiful photos. And the sun shines through the window for great light. I love the mirrors they have around the room for cool reflections. The downside to getting ready at Talon is there isn’t really a spot for the boys, so they will have to get ready somewhere else. The house where the bridal suite is has also been used for a first look with dads, and it offers a great spot without having to go outside.
The great thing about having your ceremony at Talon is you have a good option in case in rains that doesn’t require you to rent a tent. While most brides who get married at Talon choose to have their ceremony outside, moving the ceremony inside isn’t a horrible decision as the light is usually pretty enough to get good photos and the twinkling lights add a romantic and magical feel to the photos.
Because Talon Winery has a lot of wide open spaces, where portraits can be take depends on the time of day, season and weather. A lot of times when choosing a location to shoot photos, I look for open shade or pretty light and those things change every time I’m there! Luckily, Talon has some beautiful spots with fun backgrounds no matter the light.
In case of rain, portraits and family formals can also be shot inside the barn facing the giant sliding glass doors. While you wouldn’t think they could be done with a lot going on behind you in the reception space, it is actually an easy thing to accomplish for a skilled photographer.
Sunsets at Talon are beautiful! Because of the open spaces and pond down the hill, you can get some gorgeous photos at Talon during sunset, so I definitely encourage couples to build sunset photos in to their timeline.
The weddings I have shot at Talon have had their receptions in the barn, although you do have the option of bringing a tent on to the property. I love shooting in the barn, because the twinkling lights they have up around the beams are so fun to photograph! You don’t have to do a lot of decorating to the space for it to look magical. One downsize of the reception space is that the sun sets in a way that it shines really intensely through the glass doors for the last hour. This can be tricky to photograph and sometimes the light will be super contrasty if you end up doing speeches or another activity that requires you to turn your back to the glass and face the guests.
