Marriott Griffin Gate Summer Wedding | Throwback Thursday

Who: Matthew & Jenelle

What: Preparations in the hotel; first look & portraits on the golf course; ceremony on the green and reception in a tent at Marriott Griffin Gate.

Where: Lexington, Ky

When: June 2018

Jenelle found me through Wedding Wire and because she is a busy field hockey coach at Centre college, we had a Skype conversation to talk about her wedding before she booked me. It wasn’t until I met the couple at their engagement session, that I really got a sense for how sweet and caring she is, and how great of a couple Jenelle and Matthew are together. I’ll share more of that story when I share their engagement session for another Thursday Throwback!

Matthew and Jenelle’s elegant and classic wedding was on a hot summer day at Marriott Griffin Gate in Lexington, Kentucky. Jenelle looked classically beautiful in her long fitted lace wedding dress that she found at Meant to Be Boutique in Lexington, Kentucky. Her bridesmaids wore long elegant pale pink dresses from Rebecca's Bridal Boutique and their bouquets were filled with greenery and white roses from Carol Lynn's Originals. Matthew and his guys looked classic but trendy in their blue suits accented with matching blue ties.

The couple had a first look on the bridge over the pond at Griffin Gate’s golf course, followed by portraits together and with their wedding party around the green. Matthew and Jenelle even had a friend bring their puppy for a couple special photos with him. They were then married outside on the green with an amazing clear blue sky as their beautiful backdrop. The reception followed inside a tented building. The tables were decorated with white linens, blue accents, gold candle holders and simple greenery for that classic elegant feel with gold geometric and glass displays to add a touch of modern design. They had an tasty wedding cake and fun flavored cupcakes from Elizabeth Lowry Cakes for their guests to enjoy after dinner.

The couple had a really fun reception, and Jenelle’s dad, a Duke basketball fan, gave Matthew, a UK fan, a Duke basketball shirt during his speech, which had everyone laughing. Matthew and Jenelle’s first dance was to More of You by Chris Stapleton and they danced and celebrated with family and friends with music provided by Soundwave Mobile Disc Jockey. The couple ended the night surrounded by their friends and family for a final song and a sparkler exit to send them off.

Top 6 Photos With Your Bridesmaids That You Absolutely Need

There are plenty of photos you have probably considered taking on your Kentucky wedding day. From getting ready, the ceremony to pictures with your family (and of course with the groom) but what about the ladies that have helped throughout the entire wedding planning process? While you know you'll have some time to take group shots of the entire bridal party, you’ll want to make sure you have these photos with your bridesmaids as you get ready on your big day!

Bridesmaids-Talon-wedding-photographer.jpg

1. Showcase the Wedding Dress

The wedding dress has beautiful details you'll want to capture. You can pose with all of the bridesmaids to show off their dresses as well or have some great close ups of the bridesmaids helping button, zipper or lace up the details of your dress.

Bridesmaids-Lexington-wedding-photographer.jpg

2. First Look With The Bridesmaids

You have heard about the first look for the bride and groom but what about when the bridal party sees the bride for the first time? The bride's first reveal to her bridal party can result in some emotional and memorable photo opportunities.

Bridesmaids-Campbell-house-wedding-photographer.jpeg

3. Having Fun

As you are getting ready everyone's nerves are a little on edge because everyone wants to look their best. There will be moments when you just need to let loose to relax a little and having a little dance party, jumping on the bed or just being silly are moments that can make for great photo opportunities.

Bridesmaids-signature-club-wedding-photographer.jpg

4. Matching Robes or Shirts

Most brides will have getting ready attire for their bridesmaids and you'll want to capture everyone in their cute and thoughtful pre-wedding wear.

Bridesmaids-Lexington-wedding-photographer.jpg

5. Bouquets and Bridesmaids Dresses

Bouquets won't last a lifetime but the pictures you have of them will. The bridesmaids and bride bouquet shot is one that you will want to have. There are many ways you can showcase the bouquets as well as the bridesmaid's dresses. From lining everyone up and holding their bouquets out to the camera, hiding their faces, to forming a circle around the bride; this is another shot that you can get creative with.

Bridesmaids-Georgetown-wedding-photographer.jpg

6. Celebrating Shot

You're getting married! There is bound to be a bottle or two of champagne being opened in the bride's honor. Take a minute to pause as you toast away your single life with your bridesmaids for a picture perfect shot.

Lexington, Ky Summer Engagement Session | Throwback Thursday

Who: Christopher & Ashley

What: Engagement Session at McConnell Springs, Parlay Social, and downtown parking garage rooftop.

Where: Lexington, Ky

When: September 2018

I first met Ashley in 2017 when I photographed a wedding Ashley was working. She was training under the wedding planner for the wedding. Ashley eventually went off on her own and started her own event planning company, Mosaic Weddings & Events, which plans weddings and events in and around Lexington.

Because I knew Ashley was a planner, I didn’t think anything of it when she texted me one day asking if I was available for a fall wedding date in 2019. I told her I was and to let the couple know my pricing information. I was shocked when Ashley said she was the bride and that she was interested in hiring me!

Through the course of my career as a wedding photographer, there have been a handful of times where people in the wedding industry or who are photographers themselves have hired me to photograph their own weddings. It is always a compliment when someone who is skilled in either weddings or photography chooses me to document their big day, because they have special access to a lot of photographers and see all the behind the scenes parts of the day. And the biggest compliment ever when someone like Ashley, who works day in and day out with photographers, picks me!

For their Lexington engagement session, Christopher & Ashley wanted to start at a location that offered a little bit of greenery, before heading downtown to Parlay Social, the spot in Lexington they first met! We then ended their session on the rooftop, overlooking the sunset shining down on the city. On the rooftop, the couple shared a bottle of bourbon in special tumblers from Christopher’s family. We then ended the night with one of my signature silhouettes shots!

Barrel House Wedding with Wish Upon a Wedding | Lexington, Ky

Who: Greg & Deborah

What: Preparations at The Barrel House; first look & portraits at the Grand Reserve Garden; cocktail hour, ceremony and reception at The Barrel House in Lexington, Ky

Where: Lexington, Kentucky

When: February 2019

Wish Upon a Wedding grants weddings and vow renewals to couples facing serious illness or a life-altering circumstance. I ended up being the photographer for the Wish Upon a Wedding vow renewal for Greg and Deborah in Lexington through Maegan, owner of Tailored for You Events. Maegan had posted about the couple on a local Facebook group for Central Kentucky wedding vendors, and I jumped on the chance to donate my time and services to this great cause!

Greg and Deborah’s s elegant and classic Kentucky wedding was on a warm but windy day at The Barrel House in Lexington, Kentucky. Deborah looked beautiful in her full ball gown style dress that was donated by wedding dress designer Renee, from Renee’s Bridal. Her bouquet and beautiful centerpieces were filled with a variety of flowers from a local flower farm, Gray Arbor Farm. Greg looked classic and stylish in black suit accented with a pink tie, donated by Men’s Warehouse.

The couple had a first look in the garden across the street from The Barrel House, followed by their portraits in the same location. The ceremony was inside the venue, with a background of a fireplace and a beautiful wood wall. Their reception followed inside the Lexington event venue. The tables were decorated with gray linens, pink accents and beautifully decorated centerpiece of a bourbon barrel hoop on top of a barrel staves. The also had a beautiful cake donated by Batter & Buttercream for their guests to enjoy after dinner donated by Bluegrass catering.

A family friend surprised the couple by attending the wedding without them knowing she’d be able to make it, and even sang a special song for Deborah and her two daughters to dance to.

Even though the rain came late in the evening, the couple were able to dance the night away with family and friends because of their DJ, Decades of Music Mobile DJ. Greg and Deborah ended the night being surrounded by their guests as they danced to the wedding song from 25 years ago.

Lexington, Ky Unique Engagement Session | Throwback Thursday

Who: John & Mikey

What: Engagement Session at Country Boy Brewing, Shakespeare & Co, Louie Armstrong Mural and Jacobson Park

Where: Lexington, Ky

When: May 2018

Mikey and John hired me almost two years before their wedding date so we had plenty of time to plan a perfect engagement session. They also expressed they hired me because I could provide an engagement session that was unique to them and tailored to their fun personalities.

For their engagement session, they wanted to shoot at Country Boy Brewing, their favorite hangout spot. They also mentioned wanting to take photos at Jacobson Park on their kayaks, another activity they enjoyed together.

On the day of the engagement session, we started shooting at Country Boy Brewing, but quickly realized an unexpected rain storm was rolling in. So we modified our plan and went downtown and took some fun photos with a beautiful Kate Spade umbrella at Shakespeare and Co and one of Lexington’s beautiful murals.

I still wanted to give John & Mikey a unique engagement session, so I offered to shoot photos of them kayaking and doing a paint splatter shoot at Jacobson Park on a sunny day, and ended up getting such fun and unique engagement photos!

What to Look for in a Location for an Kentucky Engagement Session

Engagement sessions are an ideal way for you to see how well you and your photographer will work together. They are also great for you and your soon-to-be spouse to practice your poses for your wedding day portraits. But where should you schedule your engagement session? While you can ask your photographer for some insight on where they suggest, consider these tips to help you choose a location that has significance and meaning to you and your love.

engagement-parley-social-photographer.jpeg

1. Choose a Place That Fits You as a Couple

Do you have a favorite coffee shop? Go there. Spend most of your evenings dueling it out over scrabble? Set up a session at home. The location of your Kentucky engagement shoot should be a place you two are comfortable in. You don't have to go all out and glamorous if you are more the laid back and casual type. Nor do you have to search for an open field to shoot in if you'd rather shoot in front of a street mural. The location can be any place that will allow you two to act naturally.

engagement-kentucky-uk-arboretum-photographer.jpeg

2. Take the Sun Into Consideration.

If you are choosing a location because of the sunset or sunrise you'll have to schedule your session accordingly. You'll also want to take into consideration the season as well since the sunset starts later or earlier depending on the time of year. If you are shooting at multiple locations for your engagement session don’t forget to account for travel time.  If you're going for a sunset or sunrise backdrop you may want to keep your locations closer together to give you more time.

engagement-Distilery-district-lexington-photographer.jpeg

3. Consider the Visuals and Background

Whether you are going for a rustic or urban look, brainstorm some locations that have interesting backgrounds. Find some interesting architecture or brick walls for an urban feel or fields and trails for a more urban and country feel. Try not to choose a location that has too much foot traffic since this can result in your images getting photo bombed by a passerby.

Castle Hill Winery Wedding | Throwback Thursday

Who: Michael & Tess

What: Preparations at the bride’s parents home, the groom at the couple’s home, first look & portraits at Keeneland, cocktail hour, ceremony and reception at a winery next to The Kentucky Castle in Versailles, Ky

Where: Versailles, Ky

When: June 2018

I met Michael and Tess through a referral from a wedding I was photographing the same year. I am always excited to have referrals come from past couples, and the bride who referred me, Jaclyn, has been a wonderful champion for me and all her vendors since day one. I knew from the moment I met Michael and Tess that they were a special and sweet couple. They are two peas in a pod and get along together so well.

Michael and Tess’s simple by elegant wedding was on a warm summer day at Castle Hill Winery in Versailles, Kentucky. Tess looked beautiful in her full ball gown style dress that she found at Twirl in Lexington, Kentucky. Her bridesmaids wore long floral and floaty dresses and their bouquets were filled with a variety of flowers from Carol Lynn's Originals. Michael and his guys looked classic and stylish in their blue suits accented with pink ties.

The couple had a first look at Keeneland, followed by special portraits with their two pups, wedding party and the bride’s brothers. They were then married outside overlooking Castle Hill Winery’s fields. Their reception followed on the patio beside the winery’s barn. The tables were decorated with white linens, pink accents and and a hodgepodge of vintage picture frames, milk bottles, vases and wild flowers for a vintage but elegant feel. They even had an amazing ice cream stand from Crank & Broom for their guests to enjoy after dinner.

The couple set up the reception so they could look out over the fields at The Kentucky Castle in the distance. Michael and Tess’s first dance was to Tenerife Sea by Ed Sheeran and they danced on a cloud courtesy of C.D. Productions Mobile DJ. Michael and Tess celebrated with family and friends, and ended the night with a beautiful sunset dance in a field.

Wish Upon A Wedding Engagement at Keeneland

Who: Greg & Deborah

What: Wish Upon a Wedding Engagement Style Shoot

Where: Keeneland in Lexington, Ky

When: January 2019

Greg and Deborah have been married for 25 years and actually got married during the blizzard of 1994 in Kentucky. Because of the snow, they only had about 10 guests at their wedding, and even Deb’s father couldn’t be there to walk her down the aisle. Her family encouraged them to postpone the wedding, but the couple didn’t want to wait to be married!

Deborah and Greg have partnered with Wish Upon A Wedding to have a dream vow renewal in Lexington, Ky in February. We photographed their engagement style portraits on a snowy and cold day at Keeneland.

5 Things You Should Trust Your Kentucky Wedding Photographer With

Trust is the number one ingredient to any relationship and this is equally as true for the relationship you have with your Kentucky wedding photographer. There's a reason you chose someone to capture the most important day of your life. While you may have a vision of how you want your images to turn out, for the most part you are going to put a lot of trust in your photographer. Trusting your wedding photographer a little more in these main areas will not only result in the best images  possible for you to remember your wedding day but will also relieve you of some stress.

Engagement_Red_River_Gorge_Kentucky_Wedding_Photographer.jpg

1. Choosing the Location of the Shot

You Kentucky wedding photographer will take the time to familiarize themselves with your reception location or areas around your ceremony site to find the best places to photograph. They'll know what areas get the best light and where the best scenery is. Also, usually light trumps scenery when it comes to location choices. You would be amazed where some of the most beautiful photographs were taken! Surprisingly, it could have been a less than ideal location with amazing light.

Bride_Groom_Kentucky_Wedding_Photographer_My_Old_Kentucky_Home.jpg

2. Time of Day to Shoot

Like I already mentioned, lighting is key to creating beautiful images and using natural light will produce the best lighting setting. That doesn't mean any time of the day will give you the same results. Your Kentucky photographer will know what time of day will be best to take those gorgeous outdoor shots that won't leave harsh shadows on your face or when to sneak outside to take some night inspired shots.

Engagement_Ashland_Lexington_Wedding_Photographer.jpg

3. Poses

Trust your wedding photographer to know what pose is the most flattering for you. They can see how the light is illuminating you and what is in the background. While most photographers will take into consideration your photography ideas, you should allow them to direct most of your poses since they are aware of the most flattering poses for your body types, the location and the desired effect of the photograph.

Ceremony_Versailles_Wedding_Photographer_Woodford_Inn.jpg

4. Editing Your Photos

Trust your Kentucky photographer’s creative eye during the editing process. They will know which images will look best in black and white, color, cropped and which ones to add special effects too, if any. Part of the editing process is a part of their style and this is one of the reasons you hired them. Trust them to use their skills to make each image stunning.

Wedding_Dress_Danville_Wedding_Photographer_Warrenwood_Manor.jpg

5. Designing & Printing Your Album

Your photographer knows where to get quality albums made and probably has a long-term relationship with a reputable album making company. The worst thing you can do is have stunning wedding photographs, order an expensive album and find the colors are off, the image is blurred or it simply won’t last the generations albums should be cherished. Knowing where to get your albums made, what size they should be done in and which designs will look best in your albums is part of the package you get when you hired a professional  Kentucky wedding photographer. Trust them and listen to what they think will look best for what you want.

Tattoo Model Shoot in Richmond, Ky

Who: Bexx

What: Portraits in her Home

Where: Richmond, Kentucky

When: January 2019

Bexx is one of my favorite people to photograph. As a Kentucky photographer who loves color, I can’t get enough of the beautiful works of art on her body and her fun hair. While she looks like a wild child, this chick is one of the sweetest people I’ve ever photographed. Her inner glow radiates through on the outside and she is a natural in front of the camera. Bexx participates in a photo contest every year with a local tattoo convention, so we took some photos in her new home for this year’s contest.
