Spring Children Photography in Lexington, Ky

Who: Marley

What: Portraits in the Lexington Cemetery

Where: Lexington, Kentucky

When: April 2019

Okay, this is me bragging now. Marley isn’t just some gorgeous child model, but my daughter. And yes- she totally has child-of-a-photographer’s syndrome. Marley also thinks she is an Instagram model and Youtube star. After getting her hair cut and styled last week, I decided to take her to the Lexington Cemetery for some spring portraits with the cherry blossoms. This was a last minute decision, so I wasn’t able to catch the trees in full bloom, but the scenery was still beautiful. And boy, were there a lot of other photographers there when we went, also trying to catch the last bit of the flowery trees. So after getting a couple snaps at the iconic spot, me and Marley went off to the back of the cemetery and found a beautiful field of small white flowers to take some photos in instead.

Here are a few of my favorite images from the day:

Do You Really Need a Wedding Album?

There are a lot of different expenses to consider when planning your wedding day, your photography being one of your larger expenses. However, the reality is that out of everything you’ll be spending money on, how many of them will you still be able to look back on and use years from now? Your photos are the only item.

wedding-warrenwood-manor-danville.jpg

Your wedding photography and album are the best investments you can make as you plan your big day. There’s nothing quite like being able to physically hold and page through a beautiful wedding album. Looking through your wedding photos instantly transports you back to that day, whether it’s a week after the wedding or 20 years later when you’re telling your children all about your perfect day. Your wedding album is a physical representation of one of the most important days of your life and an heirloom that you can pass down through your family.

wedding-ceremony-buffalo-trace-kentucky.jpg

Many brides are tempted to put their own wedding album together after the wedding but most of them simply never get round to completing the task. Remember, your photographer shoots your wedding with your album in mind so they are the best person to turn to when it comes to layouts, album types, and customizations. Sending your DIY album to a consumer lab simply won’t do. It means losing the quality of your album and your photos.  And after all, you’ve invested in the photography services on your wedding day, so it makes sense that you should carry it through with a beautiful custom wedding album.

We will help you decide on the perfect album size, paper type, and layout. We will help you select the best images and create a beautiful layout to give you a professional wedding album complete with a special box to store it safely for years to come.

Cincinnati Modern Wedding | Cincinnati, OH

Who: Trevor & Sandra

What: Preparations and Portraits at the bride’s parent’s home; Ceremony & Portraits at the church; Cocktail hour, Reception and Portraits at The Newport Syndicate in Newport, KY.

Where: Newport, Kentucky

When: March 2019

Sandra found me on Instagram and contacted me in June of last year. I met her and her mother at Beans, a great coffeehouse and bakery between Lexington and Cincinnati. We hit it off right away and I was thrilled to photograph Trevor and Sandra’s wedding at The Newport Syndicate, a fun venue near Cincinnati and the waterfront in Newport.

Trevor and Sandra met while working together at a swimming pool venue. They dated for 3 years before Trevor popped the question while on vacation at Virginia Beach. While hanging out on the beach at night, Trevor proposed under the stars and had champagne to toast their new adventure.

Trevor and Sandra’s modern and classic wedding was on a rainy March day in and around Newport, Ky. Sandra looked classic in her lace ball gown styled wedding dress that she found at David’s Bridal. Her bridesmaids wore beautiful matching blue gowns from David’s Bridal. Their bouquets were filled with loose greenery and white flowers from Swan Florist. Trevor and his groomsmen looked trendy and fashionable in their grey suits accented with blue bowties from Folchi’s. Trevor’s suit was darker gray to set him apart from the other men. Trevor also got some fun portraits made with his and Sandra’s cat.

The couple decided against having a first look before their catholic ceremony, but had a moment where they held hands without seeing each other near the alter. The couple were then married in the grand church St. John The Evangelist. The couple had some portraits at the after after the ceremony and in The Newport Syndicate’s Oak Room. Dinner provided by the venue followed inside the ballroom at The Newport Syndicate. The dinner tables were decorated with white linens, blue accents and simple arrangements for that classic look. They had a tasty wedding cake that was made by the Trevor’s grandmother.

The couple had a really fun reception, with a lot of the wedding guests getting down on the dance floor, including Sandra’s 80-year-old grandfather! I also caught a couple of the wedding guests watching the final minutes of one of the NCAA March Madness game on a phone screen. Trevor and Sandra danced and celebrated with family and friends all evening with music provided by McFadden Music and the wedding ended on a high note.

Marriott Griffin Gate Bluegrass Wedding | Throwback Thursday

Who: Scott & Lauren

What: Preparations in the hotel; first look and dinner in the mansion. Portraits in the mansion and on the golf course; ceremony on the lawn in front of the mansion and dancing and bluegrass music on the patio.

Where: Lexington, Ky

When: September 2018

Scott and Lauren met me at the Bridal Bliss Evening Classic held at the wedding venue Limestone Hall in Lexington. After the event, Lauren reached out to me and we met for coffee to talk about their wedding. The couple have such an interesting story! Lauren and her twin sister are a bluegrass duo, The Price Sisters and Scott is a mandolin player. Lauren had met Scott at a Bluegrass festival they were both performs in and now Scott plays mandolin for The Price Sisters.

Scott and Lauren’s elegant and classic wedding was on a warm September day at Marriott Griffin Gate in Lexington, Kentucky. Lauren looked sleek in her long fitted lace wedding dress that she found at Sorelle Bridal in Pennsylvania. Her sister was her bridesmaid and wore a beautiful pale pink lace dress that was vintage. Their bouquets were filled with greenery and pale flowers with maroon accents from Carol Lynn's Originals. Scott and his brother looked classic in their black suits accented with classic black bowties.

The couple had a first look upstairs in a beautiful room at Griffin Gate’s mansion, followed by portraits together inside the mansion and around the golf course on the property. Lauren also had her favorite childhood toy with her for some portraits, as well as be the “ring bearer” walking down the aisle. The couple were then married outside on the lawn in front of the mansion with an amazing clear blue sky as their beautiful backdrop. Dinner followed inside the mansion and dancing on the patio. The dinner tables were decorated with white linens, deep red accents and simple arrangements for that classic look. They had an tasty wedding cake with a vintage cake topper for their guests to enjoy after dinner.

The couple had a really fun reception, with a bluegrass band and a square dancer caller for the guests to enjoy. Scott and Lauren’s first dance was to Lucky Man by David Francey and they danced and celebrated with family and friends all evening. The couple ended the night with a sparkler exit in front of the mansion to send them off.

Louisville, Ky Royal Wedding | Louisville, Ky

Who: Kerry & Megan

What: Preparations and Bride’s Portraits at The Seelbach Hotel; ceremony & portraits at the church; cocktail hour and reception at The Jeffersonian in Louisville, Ky

Where: Louisville, Kentucky

When: March 2019

Megan found me on a facebook group for Louisville Wedding Vendors and Brides. She was looking for a photographer who could handle the contrasting skin tones of her and her fiancé, Kerry, as she had bad experiences in the past with photographers not giving her quality photos. Once I sent her samples of my work and sat down and talked to her, she was confident that I knew how to take care of her on her wedding day.

Kerry and Megan’s fun Kentucky wedding was on a snowy and rainy day in Louisville and they used the theme of royalty and kings and queens. The girls got ready in the world famous hotel, The Seelbach located in downtown Louisville. The hotel is famous for having Al Capone as a frequent guest. And Megan even had some portraits taken in his special poker playing room. Megan looked beautiful in her full ball gown style dress from David’s Bridal. And her bridesmaid’s wore beautiful gold sequin gowns purchased from Dillard’s. Kerry looked classic and stylish in blue suit accented with a gold tie, from Men’s Warehouse.

The ceremony was at the couple’s church in Louisville, and the pastor and family friend officiated the ceremony. The couple also included a touching exchange of vows with their children as well. Because the couple had a later ceremony and did not have a first look, we only had a couple minutes to get some beautiful portraits of the bride and groom before the sunlight was gone. Because they were so easy going and fun, it wasn’t hard at all in the time crunch!

Their reception followed inside the Jeffersonian event venue. The tables were decorated with royal blue linens, gold accents and centerpiece of gold wine bottles with white flowers. They also had a beautiful cake made by the bride’s mother for their guests to enjoy after a taco bar provided by their friends. I could not believe how beautiful the hard crafted sugar flowers were that Megan’s mom had made for her cake! The couple also had frozen drinks provided by Frozen Delites.

Megan and Kerry had a fun surprise first dance to Here & Now by Luther Vandross that gets interrupted by their daughters and ending with the entire wedding party dancing to the Wobble Song.

The couple were able to enjoy their reception with family and friends because of their DJ, a friend of Kerry’s and a photo booth provided by Laser Labs. Kerry & Megan ended the night partying and dancing the night away with their closest friends!

Yew Dell Fall Engagement Session | Throwback Thursday

Who: Kerry & Megan

What: Engagement Session at Yew Dell Botanical Gardens

Where: Louisville, Ky

When: October 2018

I reached out to Megan when she posted on a local wedding Facebook group searching for a photographer who could handle the contrasting skin tones of her and her fiancé Kerry. I reached out to her and sent her examples of my work.

I made plans to drive to Louisville and meet Megan so we could talk more about her wedding. For the first time driving to and from Louisville for a client meeting, I ran into a bad wreck on the interstate and sat in traffic for over an hour, of which I had a full bladder the entire time! Megan was very understanding of me being a little late to our meeting, and even more understanding when I had to run straight to the restroom before saying hello.

For their engagement, Megan and Kerry met me at Yell Dew Botanical Gardens early in the morning for a fun session. That was my first experience in the location and I loved shooting the couple around the greenery and buildings in the gardens. Megan even brought some cute props we were able to use throughout the session. I loved the fall theme!

Things to Consider When Selecting a Wedding Venue

Finding the right Kentucky wedding venue takes a lot of time and research and can often be one of the hardest parts of planning a wedding. And most of the time, it is a step you need to check off before you can begin booking your other wedding vendors and getting finer details in place. You need to make sure that your venue ticks all the right boxes before you make a final decision.

Griffin-Gate-Marriot-venue-mansion-wedding.jpg

Your venue will influence your budget as well as the atmosphere on the day so before you sign on the dotted line, below are three important things to consider when deciding on your wedding venue.

Danville-bluegrass-wedding-barn-venue.jpg
  1. Venue size. Look at how many people you’re planning to invite to your wedding versus the number of people the venue can comfortably hold. A crowded reception can be quite uncomfortable but also if a venue is too large, it can affect the atmosphere and the overall look and feel. Put an initial guest list together before you start venue shopping so that you can make a better decision.

  2. What about the drinks? Alcohol and drinks are a big part of your wedding so it’s important to find out whether you can bring your own alcohol (what the costs are) or if the venue will have to supply the drinks. Since you will also need a licensed bartender to serve alcohol, find out whether the venue can assist with this so that you can factor those costs into your final budget.

  3. Preferred vendors. You’re going to be working with several different vendors in the time leading up to and on your wedding day. Many venues require you to use their vendors so find out about this before you make a booking. If they do work with specific vendors, make sure that you’re happy with their experience, style, personality, and pricing. When a venue works with preferred vendors, it often mean they’re confident in their experience and ability to delivery but it’s more important for YOU to choose vendors that fit in with your budget and overall preferences.

Lexington-kentucky-wedding-venue-reception.jpg

There are many different factors to consider when choosing the perfect wedding venue but make sure that it’s a space that speaks to your personalities and style as a couple.

Should you Hire a Professional Wedding Photographer?

Many couples make the decision to hire a friend or family member to capture their wedding and while this may help with costs, it can end up being one of their biggest regrets.

Your friends and family naturally have the best intentions when offering to shoot your wedding but having the latest camera is not enough to take amazing photos. Wedding photographers have experience, creativity, and technical expertise, something that takes years to build up.

If you’re considering hiring a non-professional photographer, these are some the risks that you should be aware of:

groom-bar-kentucky-photographer.jpg

1. A LACK OF SKILL
Photographers spend years mastering different types of shots, how to make the best use of lighting, and how to operate a professional camera correctly. When you hire a non-professional photographer, their lack of skills might end up ruining some of the most important shots of your day. For example, taking a photo of your first kiss might mean knowing how to shoot in a dimly lit church or outside in direct sunlight. Will they know how to capture various shots in any environment? Anyone can take nice pictures at a wedding but you can very clearly see when a photo has been taken by a professional versus when it has been taken by an amateur.

mom-bride-lexington-photographer.jpg

2. MISSING IMPORTANT MOMENTS
A professional wedding photographer knows when to be ready to capture those important moments throughout the day. When you hire a friend or family member to shoot your wedding, there is a good chance that they’ll miss out on some important and memorable shots. Firstly, they don’t have experience shooting weddings and secondly, they’re also there to socialize and enjoy the day. While it’s not ideal to imagine that someone close to you simply wouldn’t show up on the day, it’s important to note that they’re not running a business so they don’t have any contract in place guaranteeing that they have to show up.

dancer-reception-kentucky-wedding.jpg

3. A LACK OF EQUIPMENT
Photography is not a hobby that many people can afford. Photographers need a reasonable amount of money to get started, with many professional photographers renting their equipment for years before they can afford to buy their own. The right equipment makes a huge difference to the quality of your wedding photos and also allows your photographer to get creative. Even though a non-professional photographer might have an amazing camera, they probably don’t have any extra or backup equipment. Camera malfunctions happen all the time. Will they be prepared? Professional photographers always have backups in should any technical issues arise. Also, will your friend or family member have the means to edit and print your images after the wedding? Simply put, there is a lot more to photography than pointing and shooting.

wedding=photographer-kentucky-lexington.jpg

While the idea of asking someone close to you to shoot your wedding might sound appealing, it does come with a lot of risks. This is one of the most important days of your life so make sure that you’re hiring someone who can capture beautiful photos that you can proudly look back on years from now.

Marriott Griffin Gate Summer Wedding | Throwback Thursday

Who: Matthew & Jenelle

What: Preparations in the hotel; first look & portraits on the golf course; ceremony on the green and reception in a tent at Marriott Griffin Gate.

Where: Lexington, Ky

When: June 2018

Jenelle found me through Wedding Wire and because she is a busy field hockey coach at Centre college, we had a Skype conversation to talk about her wedding before she booked me. It wasn’t until I met the couple at their engagement session, that I really got a sense for how sweet and caring she is, and how great of a couple Jenelle and Matthew are together. I’ll share more of that story when I share their engagement session for another Thursday Throwback!

Matthew and Jenelle’s elegant and classic wedding was on a hot summer day at Marriott Griffin Gate in Lexington, Kentucky. Jenelle looked classically beautiful in her long fitted lace wedding dress that she found at Meant to Be Boutique in Lexington, Kentucky. Her bridesmaids wore long elegant pale pink dresses from Rebecca's Bridal Boutique and their bouquets were filled with greenery and white roses from Carol Lynn's Originals. Matthew and his guys looked classic but trendy in their blue suits accented with matching blue ties.

The couple had a first look on the bridge over the pond at Griffin Gate’s golf course, followed by portraits together and with their wedding party around the green. Matthew and Jenelle even had a friend bring their puppy for a couple special photos with him. They were then married outside on the green with an amazing clear blue sky as their beautiful backdrop. The reception followed inside a tented building. The tables were decorated with white linens, blue accents, gold candle holders and simple greenery for that classic elegant feel with gold geometric and glass displays to add a touch of modern design. They had an tasty wedding cake and fun flavored cupcakes from Elizabeth Lowry Cakes for their guests to enjoy after dinner.

The couple had a really fun reception, and Jenelle’s dad, a Duke basketball fan, gave Matthew, a UK fan, a Duke basketball shirt during his speech, which had everyone laughing. Matthew and Jenelle’s first dance was to More of You by Chris Stapleton and they danced and celebrated with family and friends with music provided by Soundwave Mobile Disc Jockey. The couple ended the night surrounded by their friends and family for a final song and a sparkler exit to send them off.

Top 6 Photos With Your Bridesmaids That You Absolutely Need

There are plenty of photos you have probably considered taking on your Kentucky wedding day. From getting ready, the ceremony to pictures with your family (and of course with the groom) but what about the ladies that have helped throughout the entire wedding planning process? While you know you'll have some time to take group shots of the entire bridal party, you’ll want to make sure you have these photos with your bridesmaids as you get ready on your big day!

1. Showcase the Wedding Dress

The wedding dress has beautiful details you'll want to capture. You can pose with all of the bridesmaids to show off their dresses as well or have some great close ups of the bridesmaids helping button, zipper or lace up the details of your dress.

2. First Look With The Bridesmaids

You have heard about the first look for the bride and groom but what about when the bridal party sees the bride for the first time? The bride's first reveal to her bridal party can result in some emotional and memorable photo opportunities.

3. Having Fun

As you are getting ready everyone's nerves are a little on edge because everyone wants to look their best. There will be moments when you just need to let loose to relax a little and having a little dance party, jumping on the bed or just being silly are moments that can make for great photo opportunities.

4. Matching Robes or Shirts

Most brides will have getting ready attire for their bridesmaids and you'll want to capture everyone in their cute and thoughtful pre-wedding wear.

5. Bouquets and Bridesmaids Dresses

Bouquets won't last a lifetime but the pictures you have of them will. The bridesmaids and bride bouquet shot is one that you will want to have. There are many ways you can showcase the bouquets as well as the bridesmaid's dresses. From lining everyone up and holding their bouquets out to the camera, hiding their faces, to forming a circle around the bride; this is another shot that you can get creative with.

6. Celebrating Shot

You're getting married! There is bound to be a bottle or two of champagne being opened in the bride's honor. Take a minute to pause as you toast away your single life with your bridesmaids for a picture perfect shot.

Lexington, Ky Summer Engagement Session | Throwback Thursday

Who: Christopher & Ashley

What: Engagement Session at McConnell Springs, Parlay Social, and downtown parking garage rooftop.

Where: Lexington, Ky

When: September 2018

I first met Ashley in 2017 when I photographed a wedding Ashley was working. She was training under the wedding planner for the wedding. Ashley eventually went off on her own and started her own event planning company, Mosaic Weddings & Events, which plans weddings and events in and around Lexington.

Because I knew Ashley was a planner, I didn’t think anything of it when she texted me one day asking if I was available for a fall wedding date in 2019. I told her I was and to let the couple know my pricing information. I was shocked when Ashley said she was the bride and that she was interested in hiring me!

Through the course of my career as a wedding photographer, there have been a handful of times where people in the wedding industry or who are photographers themselves have hired me to photograph their own weddings. It is always a compliment when someone who is skilled in either weddings or photography chooses me to document their big day, because they have special access to a lot of photographers and see all the behind the scenes parts of the day. And the biggest compliment ever when someone like Ashley, who works day in and day out with photographers, picks me!

For their Lexington engagement session, Christopher & Ashley wanted to start at a location that offered a little bit of greenery, before heading downtown to Parlay Social, the spot in Lexington they first met! We then ended their session on the rooftop, overlooking the sunset shining down on the city. On the rooftop, the couple shared a bottle of bourbon in special tumblers from Christopher’s family. We then ended the night with one of my signature silhouettes shots!

Barrel House Wedding with Wish Upon a Wedding | Lexington, Ky

Who: Greg & Deborah

What: Preparations at The Barrel House; first look & portraits at the Grand Reserve Garden; cocktail hour, ceremony and reception at The Barrel House in Lexington, Ky

Where: Lexington, Kentucky

When: February 2019

Wish Upon a Wedding grants weddings and vow renewals to couples facing serious illness or a life-altering circumstance. I ended up being the photographer for the Wish Upon a Wedding vow renewal for Greg and Deborah in Lexington through Maegan, owner of Tailored for You Events. Maegan had posted about the couple on a local Facebook group for Central Kentucky wedding vendors, and I jumped on the chance to donate my time and services to this great cause!

Greg and Deborah’s s elegant and classic Kentucky wedding was on a warm but windy day at The Barrel House in Lexington, Kentucky. Deborah looked beautiful in her full ball gown style dress that was donated by wedding dress designer Renee, from Renee’s Bridal. Her bouquet and beautiful centerpieces were filled with a variety of flowers from a local flower farm, Gray Arbor Farm. Greg looked classic and stylish in black suit accented with a pink tie, donated by Men’s Warehouse.

The couple had a first look in the garden across the street from The Barrel House, followed by their portraits in the same location. The ceremony was inside the venue, with a background of a fireplace and a beautiful wood wall. Their reception followed inside the Lexington event venue. The tables were decorated with gray linens, pink accents and beautifully decorated centerpiece of a bourbon barrel hoop on top of a barrel staves. The also had a beautiful cake donated by Batter & Buttercream for their guests to enjoy after dinner donated by Bluegrass catering.

A family friend surprised the couple by attending the wedding without them knowing she’d be able to make it, and even sang a special song for Deborah and her two daughters to dance to.

Even though the rain came late in the evening, the couple were able to dance the night away with family and friends because of their DJ, Decades of Music Mobile DJ. Greg and Deborah ended the night being surrounded by their guests as they danced to the wedding song from 25 years ago.
